Wow, has it been over a year already? My how the time flies!!! Hmm, let's see, when I left you last, we were scheduling surgeries to add the posts. That turned out to be an interesting adventure in itself!
We got in, and the put the 3 posts in, but then only put the 'outer part of the post' (for lack of the right word - it is 2 pieces, one drills into the bone, the other part screws in and is the part that is seen). Anyhow, they only put the outer part of the upper 2 on. They said that the bone was thin enough on the bottom one, that they wanted to make sure it was set before they added the outer part to it.
That in itself went really well. As usual, they put Caleb on antibiotics (a penicillin derivative) for 10 days. That is standard. Well, on the 10th day, the skin around those posts looked very red and infected. I took him to the doctor's office (we didn't go to the pediatrician's that day b/c they couldn't work him in that time). That was fine and good. We got put on 10 more days of antibiotics. For what it's worth, I *did* tell them that Caleb had been on antibiotics, and told them what kind. Well, they put him on 10 more days of another penicillin derivative.
On day 10 of the 2nd round (note here, that is 20 days), Caleb woke me up at about 6:30 am complaining that his tummy hurt. I asked him if he had a bowl (thinking he needed to throw up - didn't want to get thrown up on while I was looking for something to help, plus I was really groggy, just woke up...). Anyhow, he started crying that it wasn't that kinda hurt, it itched REALLY bad. I told him to turn the light on. OMGosh, he was red ALL OVER his chest/tummy, his legs, his arms, his back, his face. He was like one giant hive (although we weren't 'positive' at that point). So we took pictures and called the pediatrician's office as SOON as they opened. I ran by Wal-Mart to develop the film while we waited. It turned out to be a good decision b/c they had already cleared up pretty well by the time we got in.
From the pictures and our description of symptoms, the ped. decided it was a reaction from the antibiotics. UGGGGHHHHH That was NOT what I wanted to hear!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She told us to give him benadryl, and you know the drill for hives. *sigh* Ok, so a couple of days later, we were doing something outside, and he started crying it itched REALLY bad! So I called the pediatrician again (Sunday morning), and they met me back at the office on Sun. morning! He (one of the associates of the office) saw the actual hives, and agreed that he believed that the 1st one was correct, he had a reaction to the penicillin. GRRRRRR
We have tried to get tests run to verify this, but they absolutely will NOT work with us. So, we work under the assumption that he is now allergic to penicillin. It makes sense, he has an uncle that is terribly allergic to penicillin. Anyhow, after that little episode, things calmed back down! YAY
Everything healed up, Caleb was doing beautifully, and life went on as usual! *S*
